Does free will exist?

The problem as to whether humans have free will has a long history. Philosophers have developed many divergent views, whereby most of them agree that without the freedom to choose between different courses of action, we cannot be morally responsible. Those who deny the existence of free will have done so on many different grounds. For example, theologians, physicists and brain scientists have entered the debate as well, and the latter (like Dutch experts Dick Swaab and Victor Lamme) argue on the basis of empirical research that humans do not have free will. But do these empirical results really warrant the denial of free will?
