Bamba Wassoulou Groove komt na een uitverkocht concert vorig jaar terug naar Grounds met een gloednieuwe plaat!
Malinese muziek uit de jaren ’70 en ’80 is helemaal terug! De funkende grooves, jachtige vocalen en hypnotiserende gitaren van de legendarische Super Djata Band vormen de inspiratiebron voor Bamba Wassoulou Groove.
Deze band uit de Malinese hoofdstad Bamako werd in 2012 geformeerd door percussionist Bamba Dembélé , ooit medeoprichter van de Super Djata Band. In de jaren ’70 en ’80 was dit een van de populairste bands van Mali. De muziek van Bamba Wassoulou Groove zit vol citaten en verwijzingen naar de Super Djata Band en diens briljante gitarist Zani Diabaté. Bamba Wassoulou Groove band geeft er een eigentijdse draai aan. In het opzwepende spel van de gitaristen klinkt ook rock, blues en psychedelica, die wonderwel samensmelt met traditionele ritmes en melodieën van de Bambara , de grootste etnische groep in Mali, en muziek uit de Wassoulou regio. Stil zitten is dan ook geen optie bij deze broeierige Malinese dansmuziek!

Msafiri Zawose
De multi-instrumentalist, songwriter en charismatische performer Msafiri Zawose is een pionier op het gebied Gogo fusion en mixt de traditionele Afrikaanse Gogo stijl met moderne ritmes en elektronica.
Msafiri’s vader, Hukwe Zawose, was een groot muzikant en tourde in de jaren ’80 en ’90 met Peter Gabriel. Hij heeft een grote muzikale invloed gehad op Tanzania en op zijn zoon.
Msafari’s fusion van traditionele Gogo en moderne ritmes, aangevuld met hypnotiserende zang zorgt voor een uniek, soulvol en spiritueel geluid. Met zijn experimentele manier van muziek maken eert hij zijn vader en neemt hij een een bijzondere plek in, in het muzikale landschap van Tanzania en de rest van de wereld.

Anyone seeking pure guitar energy and signs of a healthy musical revival in Bamako Mali need look no further. Led by three guitarists, notably Moussa Diabaté of Super Rail Band fame, Bamba Wassoulou Groove both electrify old Malian classics and compose endearing new Bamana tunes. Uner the guidance of musical director Bamba Dembélé, the seven-man band reinvent the great 1970s standard ‘Bina’ and allow Diabaté’s guitar new unbridled freedom in songs like ‘Fadegnacouma’, ‘Lolo’ and the title-track. The warm voice of Ousmane Diakaté drives many Dembélé’s compositions to telling effect, but this is a collective effort where the balafon of Mory Kouyaté shoulders the dizzying riffs of the guitar trio. This is likely to light up the dance floors throughout the African continent.
Msafiri Zawose
A charismatic performer, prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Msafiri Zawose is a pioneer of Gogo-fusion music that takes the traditional folk style of Gogo and weds it to modern rhythms and production styles.
His father, Hukwe Zawose was a musical giant, an influential figure in postÂindependence Tanzania, head of a large musical clan, a master musician and one of the most mesmerizing performers ever seen.
However, Msafiri’s fusion of traditional Gogo instrumentation and modern rhythms, coupled with his transcendent vocals, has created a unique, soulful and spiritual sound. In this way, he continues to honor his father’s legacy whilst cementing his position as a musical pioneer in Tanzania and the world at large.
